Warning: contains major spoilers
Well season 5 certainly went in a different direction, no scrap that, not direction, time! Yep, our tireless agents travel into the future minus Fitz. They didn’t even get to chill after all the happenings of season 4. You would think a little holiday would be in order.
So what did the scooby gang get up to?
Fitz got left behind in the time-travelling and had to work out where everyone disappeared to. For a man who traversed the universe to rescue the love of his life, there’s no way that the matter of 70-odd years is going to stop him from finding Simmons again even if he does have to take the long way round. And thanks to some wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey science stuff, he’s not going to let something so trivial as dying get in the way either.
Simmons had to make the most of being years away from her beloved Fitz though I don’t think being enslaved to a blue alien was quite what she had in mind. Luckily the Fitz-Simmons dream team are reunited and get a happy ever after. Well, happy ever after until Fitz dies so it was a really brief happy ever after. At least she got to meet her grandson despite not even having had her daughter yet. Time travel eh.
Speaking of people dying, Coulson seemed to pull it off three times this season. It doesn’t kill his sense of humour though and his quick wit and little quips are as good as ever. He also finds some time for some kissy-kissy time with the new love of his life who has actually always been there – the Ice Queen herself. But is this the final curtain for Coulson?
Though the Ice Queen, May, seems to be melting more and more and becoming more human. Except when it comes to fighting the bad dudes which she seems to do a LOT of this season. I would lay a bet that she beat up more people in this season than in any of the other seasons. She does, however, meet her match with a big blue alien Ice Queen with flying balls.
Yo Yo makes some controversial decisions that the rest of the scooby gang disagree with and she finds herself with little support. Not a great season for Yo Yo as she meets her future self and loses not one but both of her arms. Things go even worse for her when things go pearshaped with Mack. This is one season Yo Yo would want to put behind her (and not have it come back).
‘Mackhammer’ Mack finds himself getting beaten up a lot and having to fight a lot. He still manages to hang onto his moral compass which seems to be pinging stronger than ever. Yo Yo sets his moral compass in a massive spin, he holds Fitz’s hand while he dies, and then finds himself as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. A pretty busy season for Mack.
Daisy/Quake has become a martial arts diva with minimal training. She loses her powers, wants to sacrifice herslf in the future to save the world but is dragged back home, regains her powers, and finds herself being put in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. (for a bit anyway). And not forgetting she’s the Destroyer of Worlds. Is there anything she can’t do?
Talbot finally rids himself of the rather harsh military haircut and gets a little hairy. He miraculously surives a bullet to the head, loses the plot, gets brainwashed, and then becomes a ‘Gravitionium man’ superhero turned villain. A busy season for Talbot then.
Deke (Jeff Ward) is the new guy who is a bit of a curveball. I didn’t see his ancestory bombshell coming at all (and that’s not saracasm, I really didn’t).
Hunter gets an honourable mention with his fleeting appearance. Nice to see an old face.
Season 5 was a pretty massive season. You’ll need to suspend disbelief for quite a lot but forget about the niggly things like how the gang were able to fit robot arms to Yo Yo with relative ease or how they made an airplane fly in space. Just roll with it all. If you’re already sucked into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. by now then surely you loved season 5. It’s not a show you can predict, the characters go through all kinds of arcs and you just never know who’s going to die next despite death not being quite so final in the Mavel Universe. I have no idea what is coming next!
