My latest binge-watch – Colony

Warning: contains minor spoilers.

I decided I have been a bit too invested in Marvel offerings lately so I decided to switch it up and try a different series. Colony came up on my suggestions on Netflix, so in a rare moment of quick decisiveness, I started in season 1. Several episodes in and I’m still invested in it so that’s always a good sign. What is bad is finding out that it was cancelled after 3 seasons (without a proper conclusion). Cancelling a decent show seems to be a popular trend. Not popular among the fans that’s for sure.

Colony stars Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies as husband and wife. When the show starts, all we know is that aliens are controlling the Earth but no one seems to have even seen one. Everything on Earth is controlled by a militaristic police force and proxy governors. The population is sectioned by large walls and alien structures.

Understandably everything has become a bit messy for people. There’s a lot of division between the population of those who abide by the alien overseers, those that want to stop them, and those that don’t like the situation but also don’t want to cause trouble.

Characters find themselves in situations where they have to make tough choices to ensure the survival of the resistance operation. Some characters are forced to do whatever it takes to do the right thing while some are forced to do whatever it takes to keep their loved ones safe. It is a very well written, character-led show.

The acting is brilliant. And for Josh Holloway fans, you’ll be please to know he has his trademark haircut in this season and there’s even a quip remark about it.

What is drawing me in are the characters, their circumstances, and also the mystery surrounding the aliens. We know they’re there but you don’t learn much about them to start with. Despite knowing I’ll never get a satisfactory ending, I will keep watching this one as it keeps getting better with every episode.
